How to Play Bridge — the Simple Beginner's Guide

Bridge is the world's great social card game — a game of thinking, memory and partnership. The basic rules are far simpler than they look, and you can play your first hand today. Here is everything you need, step by step.

Step 0 — who plays?

Four players, in two partnerships. Partners sit opposite each other: North–South against East–West. Every hand has two phases — first the bidding, then the card play.

Step 1 — the deal

A standard 52-card deck is dealt out evenly: 13 cards each. Sort your hand by suit — ♥ ♦ ♠ ♣ — and value it with high-card points: Ace = 4, King = 3, Queen = 2, Jack = 1. An average hand is worth about 10 points.

Step 2 — the bidding

In the bidding (the auction), each partnership works out its combined strength and sets the contract: how many tricks it commits to winning, and in which trump suit (or with no trump at all — NT). Beginner's rule of thumb: open the bidding with 12+ points, and aim for game — a big bonus contract — with about 25 combined points.

💡 Don't memorize tables: on J Bridge the built-in teacher suggests a bid and explains exactly why — the fastest way to learn bidding.

Step 3 — tricks and card play

  1. The side that won the auction plays the contract. One of them is the declarer; their partner becomes the dummy, laying their cards face-up on the table for the declarer to play.
  2. Each player plays one card per round. You must follow the suit that was led if you have it — the most important rule in the game.
  3. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick — unless someone ruffs with a trump, which beats every other suit.
  4. There are 13 tricks in a hand. Make your contract and you score; go down and the points go to your opponents.
